how do yo define yourself

This lockdown period is an interesting one for most of us. We are devoid from the rush of life as we normally know it and we are thrust into the solitude of our homes.

When we are isolated from our busyness, we are made painfully aware of many things that is often drowned out by our worldly pursuits.

We face a time of redefinition and this is an uncomfortable process for a lot of us. When you can no longer define yourself by your activities, job title and possessions, because no one is here to bear witness to it, or comment on it, you are left with a big question…’who am I then?’

The world is filled with ubiquitous commentary on everything anyone does, so it is easy to lend an ear to it and before we know it we’ve gotten lost in who others say we are or should be. That is immense pressure, because the fact is it is impossible to live your live in such a way that it keeps everyone happy. So why do we put ourselves through it?

The answer is simple…we have never taken the time to define ourselves in a way that leaves us unshakeable by disruptive definitions of society. Yes, we can never be placed one box, because who I was yesterday is not the same person as I’ll be tomorrow, but there should be a center we operate from, a golden thread.

It’s easy to lose perspective when you don’t search for that definition in the one place that is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow…the heart of the Father.

‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.’

When we sit at His feet and we habitually delve into the word’s definition of who we are it becomes easier and easier to be steadfast in our identity.

If you feel overwhelmed and you don’t know where to start, here are some scriptures I like to recite.

Ephesians 1:4

‘even before He made the world, God loved us and CHOSE US in Christ, to be Holy and without fault in His eyes.’

Jeremiah 31:3

‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.’

Luke 12;24

‘consider the ravens; they do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet Go feeds them. How much MORE VALUABLE you are than birds.’

Psalm 139:13-16

‘For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.’

May you take the time, during this lockdown, to sit and rethink how you define yourself.

Allow your identity to be Spirit inspired.
